Orientation Sessions |
| |
|
As many students find life in Australia quite different to life in their home country, orientation activities are provided to help students become familiar with Australian culture and customs and to introduce students to the Institute and its services. All students will be provided with an orientation booklet once their enrolment at the Institute is confirmed. This booklet will detail many aspects of life and study in Melbourne and will introduce students to life in Australia. In the week preceding their course, students will be provided with an orientation program which will further develop on the material supplied in the booklet.
Your first week at Holmesglen will be spent in the Orientation Program - getting to know all about Holmesglen, its facilities and a little about Australia and how to settle in and enjoy your time here. The orientation program also includes enrolment, a campus familiarization tour, studying at HolmesgIen, living in Australia, an excursion and opportunities for meeting other students.
It is important to attend the Orientation Program. Your Overseas Student Health Cover will be processed. You will be enrolled and receive a student identification card.

Health Services |
| |
International students are required to contribute to the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. This cover must be paid before a visa is issued. OSHC will cover most medical expenses whilst the student is in Australia. A medical centre is provided on campus. Consultation with the Institute doctor can be made on appointment. There is no charge for this service. As of 1 October 2008 OSHC premiums are A$380 for a single student for 12 months.
Students are strongly encouraged to take out OSHC to cover them for the duration of their studies in Australia. Holmesglen can provide details of discounts available to students who wish to pay their OSHC for periods longer than 13 months.

Counselling Services |

|

A welfare officer is employed to assist students with further accommodation requirements renewing visas and to introduce them to a range of sporting, religious and other activities in Melbourne.

English Language Assistance |
| |
The Institute provides a complete language support service to international students with extra tutorial assistance throughout the year. All international students have access to this tutorial service. In addition, they can enrol in English language programs offered at the weekend. There is no charge for these services.

Library and Information Commons |
| |
Holmesglen provides a modern Information Commons on each campus. Each Information Commons provides students with libraries, conference rooms and classrooms, and a central pit containing fully-networked computers (Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs with 2GB RAM, 160 GB hardrive, DVD burners and 19" LCD monitors).
The library contains a wide range of books, journals, DVDs, video and audio-cassettes. The computers enable students to increase their knowledge of the latest technology through access to the Internet, a range of electronic databases and CD-Roms, application software, and multimedia learning packages.
The Information Commons is open 7 days a week. Helpful staff are on hand to assist students to use the library to find specific information. Computers, video-players and discussion rooms are available and may be booked in advance. Designated silent study areas are provided. Wi-Fi access is available on some locations on all Holmesglen campuses. Additionally, Holmesglen students may use university libraries to borrow books through the CAVAL system of inter-library loans. Information about this system may be obtained during orientation.
Holmesglen provides access to computer rooms during the day, after hours, at weekends and during the holidays.
