Homestay Accommodation |
| |
The Institute can arrange homestay accommodation with carefully screened families. Homestay means living with a family in their home. For many students who are away from home for the first time, it is a good way to learn about the Australian lifestyle and customs while living in a family environment. Homestay is a good choice if you need to improve your English. The family can also help you overcome any culture shock you may experience.
A homestay family in Australia can mean many things. It can be a family consisting of a mother, father and children, or a single mother or father with or without children. Australia is a multicultural country - many people from different countries have come here to live and are now 'Australians'.
Homestay students are provided with their own bedroom. Three meals a day are provided. Breakfast, and often lunch, are self serve, while dinner is cooked each day.
The family pays the electricity and other bills. You must pay for all you own telephone calls and personal needs. In many Australian families both parents will work and may not be at home when you are. You will be expected to keep your room tidy and you may be asked to assist with light chores around the house such as setting the table before dinner or washing up after dinner.
An Accommodation Placement fee of A$240 is charged for Holmesglen to arrange this service, which also includes airport reception and transport to the homestay accommodation.
Students who apply for this homestay service are required to fill in a homestay application form listing their individual requirements. A homestay family is then selected and a family profile sent to the student. The Profile will give you brief information about the family with whom you have been placed. Once you arrive at the homestay family, they will explain to you the rules and customs of the family. You should ask about anything that you are not sure about. Perhaps you need to know when it is convenient to make and receive telephone calls or if you can invite your friends home. It is important to make sure everything is clear at the beginning.
On your arrival in Melbourne you are required to pay 2 weeks' rent (A$440) directly to the homestay family. Your bond payment is not the same as your rent. Full board accommodation is currently A$220 per week. If you wish to extend your stay with the homestay family after the first two week period you may do so and continue to pay the family on a two-weekly basis. If you wish to move out of a homestay you are required to give the family two weeks' notice.
Living in Australia will give you the chance to develop your independence and the opportunity to broaden your own interests. Remember that the success of your homestay experience will ultimately depend on you.
Rooming House Please note that where a family has the provision for 5 or more beds for international students, Holmesglen considers this type of accommodation as a "Rooming House". Like, Homestay Accommodation, students are provided with an individual room and three meals a day.
Holmesglen uses the services of an Accommodation Agency to provide homestays. The Institute's role is limited to facilitating contact between you and the Agency. The Institute takes no responsibility for the accommodation provided.
